“I started as…”: United Star reveals wild journey across the pitch that landed him dream role and mega-money move

It feels as though Benjamin Sesko’s New Year’s resolution was to silence his doubters.

With five goals in his last six outings, the Slovenian has emerged as one of Europe’s most in‑form strikers. His strikes have directly delivered five crucial league points, suggesting United’s £74 million gamble is beginning to pay off.

At just 22, many believe Sesko is on a trajectory that will take him to the very top, where he belongs.

While anticipation grows over how he will evolve into the ruthless finisher long likened to Erling Haaland, a fascinating revelation has surfaced about United’s No. 30.

Sesko: I didn’t start off as a striker

Speaking on the Inside Carrington podcast, Sesko stunned listeners by admitting he did not begin his footballing journey as a forward.

“I started as a goalkeeper, when I was a really young age. But then one game I said, I remember, I looked at my father in the middle of the game, I said, ‘father, this is so boring. I don’t have anything to do in the goal,’” Sesko told the club media.

“It was hard for me to see teammates up there who couldn’t score a goal… There were also times when I was a goalkeeper, I took the ball, went through the whole pitch and then scored.

“It was a really nice journey. And then I started as a centre‑back before moving up to striker.”

Meant to lead the line

Switching from goalkeeper to striker proved a masterstroke. Today, Sesko is one of the most exciting attacking talents in Europe, a player United broke the bank to secure ahead of Arsenal and Newcastle United.

Although his start at Old Trafford was shaky, he now appears to have found his rhythm in M16.

Earning his spot in Carrick’s line‑up

Intriguingly, Sesko has been rescuing United from the bench, yet caretaker head coach Michael Carrick has resisted handing him a start across five matches.

Nevertheless, the clamour is intensifying for the Slovenian to be unleashed from the first whistle in United’s next outing.

And when Everton welcome United under the Hill Dickson lights on Monday night, the expectation is that Sesko will finally lead the line.
