“He keeps telling us…”: Amad reveals Carrick’s consistent instruction that is driving United’s incredible turnaround

Manchester United forward Amad has detailed what it’s like to play under Michael Carrick.

Early success

Carrick has hit the ground running since he arrived at the club in December as Ruben Amorim’s temporary replacement.

Amorim was finally dismissed after a turbulent 14-month spell, with the final straw being his public outburst in which he appeared to take a swipe at the club’s hierarchy.

Carrick has taken charge of five Premier League games, winning four and drawing one. This run includes victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Already, there are noises that Carrick should be considered for the permanent position, especially if performances and results continue to improve and United secure Champions League football.

Amad has started all five games of the Carrick era and played a key role in United’s unbeaten streak.

The Ivorian sat down with club media and expressed just how much he is loving life under the legendary United midfielder.

Amad hails Carrick

Amad said, “I think having Michael Carrick as head coach in the team is very important because he knows the club. He’s the main man who can tell us [about] the club we are playing for.”

“Before the games he keeps telling us: you guys, you are playing for yourself, but you’re playing also for the fans, and he’s telling us the fans are very important for us.”

“We are also playing for the fans because we want to win and we want to give them something back.”

Amad continued, “Having Carrick is very enjoyable and we enjoy the training. He’s a nice guy. He talks with everyone and I’m so lucky because I know him already – he was here when I arrived, when I was 18.”

“I also played against him when he was in the Championship, so I know him since a long time and he’s a nice guy.”

Former United defender Jonny Evans is part of Carrick’s backroom staff, alongside Jonathan Woodgate and Steve Holland.  Amad stressed the importance of having people like Evans, who know the club so well, around the team.

“It’s very important as a player to have people around who know the club, who know exactly what this club means for them. They keep telling us what it really means, so that is very important.”

“And when we go to the pitch we want to fight for them. So that’s important to have people like this.”

Amad and his teammates return to action on Monday, February 23, when they face Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
