‘Game Of Thrones’ has multiple sequels in the works, confirms George R.R. Martin

George R.R. Martin has indicated that there are multiple Game Of Thrones sequels currently in the works.

Since the conclusion of the eighth and final season of HBO’s epic fantasy saga in 2019, a number of prequel shows have entered production, most notably House Of The Dragon, which premiered with its first season in 2022 and since the second season last year has now been recommissioned for a third and fourth season.

A second prequel show A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms is set to arrive on HBO on January 18, with the six episodes serving as an adaptation of Martin’s Tales Of Dunk And Egg novellas. That show has also been recommissioned for a second season already.

It is also known that a number of other prequels are in the works, and now Martin has strongly hinted that some of the Game Of Thrones-connected projects will also be set after the events of the main show.

Speaking at the Iceland Noir Festival, Martin said (via Los Siete Reinos): “Apart from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, there are other Game of Thrones spinoff projects in development. The majority are prequels, and there are several in development – maybe five or six shows. And I’m not developing them alone, I’m working on them with other people. And yes, there’s a sequel or two [in the works].”

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms will star Irish actor Peter Claffey as Dunk, a squire to a hedge knight, Ser Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb). When Ser Arlan dies, Dunk inherits his travels to Ashford to compete in a tourney and gets his own squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), a prince of the Targaryen dynasty.

Also in the cast are the likes of Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings and Sam Spruell.

Elsewhere, Martin recently said he dislikes his work being adapted by other writers, arguing that he feels they often make the material worse. “You’re adapting your book or your story and they hire someone to do it and… they empower this writer: ‘Okay, take The Great Gatsby but make it your own.’ And I don’t want anyone to make The Great Gatsby their own,” he said.

He has also been at odds with fans who criticise him for not finishing A Song Of Ice And Fire’s final books. He has called the task “the curse of my life”, and recently wrote in a blog post that fans who think he doesn’t care about finishing the books are wrong.
