Did you know you can fly to Europe for fewer points than many domestic flights cost?
Virgin Atlantic offers Saver awards that start at just 6,000 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points in economy one‑way from the northeastern U.S. to London (and select services to Manchester, England), plus taxes, fees and surcharges.
For the low number of points required, you might be expecting a bare‑bones basic economy experience. Fear not, however, as Virgin Atlantic offers a full-service product, even at this low points rate, making it one of the best ways to cross the Atlantic for less.
Here are six benefits of booking a 6,000-point flight across the Atlantic on Virgin Atlantic, plus information on how to find and book these Saver fares.
6 things you’ll receive on a 6,000‑point flight to London (or Manchester)
Virgin Atlantic offers three different economy-class fare types for cash bookings: Light, Classic and Delight. Light excludes checked baggage as well as seat selection (prior to check-in); Classic is comparable to main cabin fares on other airlines; and Delight offers premium check-in, priority boarding and the ability to select extra-legroom seats.
Economy-class redemptions booked through the Flying Club program for flights operated by Virgin Atlantic are for the Classic fare type, with which you can enjoy:
- Free standard seat selection: Select your seats with up to 31 inches of pitch without paying extra, as standard seat selection is included on award tickets originating in the United States at any time, including at booking.
- Baggage allowance: You can bring a standard carry‑on of up to 22 pounds on board (as well as a small underseat personal item), plus a checked bag up to 50 pounds, on redemptions across the Atlantic.
- Comfort items at your seat: Expect a pillow, blanket and headphones waiting for you, which is handy whether you’re dozing after dinner or losing yourself in a new-release movie.
- Seatback entertainment and charging: Every economy seat has its own inflight entertainment screen with more than 300 hours of television and movies. You can also enjoy USB charging at every seat; some aircraft also have shared universal outlets.
- Meals, snacks and drinks: Multiple meals, snacks and beverages (including alcoholic drinks, tea and coffee) are complimentary, so you won’t have to buy on board or shell out for an expensive airport meal to take with you.
- Tier points toward elite status: The Flying Club program awards elite qualifying tier points on reward flights operated by Virgin Atlantic, helping you inch toward Silver or Gold status, even if you are not traveling on a cash ticket.
Note that you cannot currently book Virgin Atlantic Economy Light or Delight with points.

How to find and book Virgin Atlantic Saver awards
The Flying Club program prices award redemptions dynamically, meaning they vary depending on demand; however, in economy class, they are available on select off-peak dates one-way from:
- 6,000 Virgin points from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington D.C., to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR), and from JFK to Manchester Airport (MAN)
- 7,500 Virgin points from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Miami International Airport (MIA), Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA) to LHR, from ATL and MCO to MAN, and from MCO to Edinburgh Airport (EDI)
- 9,000 Virgin points from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to LHR, and from LAS to MAN
To find these prices, start by logging in to your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account and locating the “Reward seat checker” tool in the right-hand menu.

Enter your departure and arrival airports and pick a travel month. The calendar grid will appear, with red “Saver” tags marking the lowest awards.
These red tags indicate the lowest-priced award seats, so focus your search on them to part with the fewest Virgin points.

Once you find a date with the red Saver tag that works for you, click on the red “Find my reward seats” button on the bottom right of the reward seat checker page, reenter your search details and proceed to check available flights and required taxes, fees and surcharges.
Saver redemptions are only available on Virgin Atlantic flights, so the reward seat checker will only show Virgin Atlantic flights.

What taxes, fees and surcharges are payable?
Flying Club does levy taxes, fees and surcharges on Saver fares to and from the United Kingdom, and the U.K. Air Passenger Duty is payable on all flights departing the U.K. (regardless of carrier or program).
On a round-trip economy Saver fare between New York and London, Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club program charges $436.63 in taxes, fees and surcharges on top of the 12,000 Virgin points required.
Based on TPG’s November 2025 valuation of Virgin points at 1.3 cents apiece, those 12,000 Virgin points would be worth $156. Adding the $436.63 in taxes, fees and surcharges, a round-trip Saver fare would cost you $592.63 in points and cash.
It’s worth comparing this to the cheapest round-trip economy cash fares we found on the same route:
- Light: $513.23
- Classic: $713.23
- Delight: $838.23
Therefore, if you don’t need checked baggage or advance seat selection, you might want to consider a Light cash fare rather than a Flying Club Saver redemption if you can find them at this price, as you will also earn points by crediting a cash fare to Flying Club or a partner program, such as Delta Air Lines SkyMiles.
However, if you’re looking to book a Classic fare for the extra inclusions and you can find Saver fares as low as 6,000 Virgin points each way, this is a terrific way to redeem Virgin points and obtain well over our valuation.

How do these fares compare with other program redemptions?
So you can decide on the best value for your next flight across the pond, here’s a comparison of starting prices for round-trip main cabin economy (excluding basic economy) award redemptions on the busy New York-to-London corridor offered by popular loyalty programs (prices were the lowest available at the time of writing):
| Program | Cost in points and miles | Taxes, fees and surcharges (round-trip) | TPG valuation of currency (November 2025) | Total cost in the value of points or miles, plus taxes, fees and surcharges |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| <strong>Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (Virgin-operated flights)</strong> | 12,000 Virgin points | $436.63 | 1.3 cents | $592.63 |
| <strong>Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (Delta-operated flights)</strong> | 20,000 Virgin points | $636.63 | 1.3 cents | $896.63 |
| <strong>American Airlines AAdvantage (American-operated flights)</strong> | 38,000 AAdvantage miles | $227.13 | 1.65 cents | $854.13 |
| <strong>American Airlines AAdvantage (British Airways-operated flights)</strong> | 45,000 AAdvantage miles | $829.53 | 1.65 cents | $1,572.03 |
| <strong>Delta SkyMiles (Delta-operated flights)</strong> | 38,000 SkyMiles | $213 | 1.25 cents | $688 |
| <strong>Delta SkyMiles (Virgin Atlantic-operated flights)</strong> | 38,000 SkyMiles | $269 | 1.25 cents | $744 |
| <strong>United MileagePlus (United Airlines-operated flights)</strong> | 51,700 MileagePlus miles | $211.23 | 1.4 cents | $935.03 |
| <strong>British Airways Club (British Airways-operated flights)</strong> | 50,000 Avios | $131.37 | 1.4 cents | $831.37 |
| <strong>British Airways Club (American-operated flights)</strong> | 41,500 Avios | $513.44 | 1.4 cents | $1,094.44 |
Although you may see discounted redemption amounts through certain airline loyalty programs, such as limited-time sales, these may book into basic economy.
Be cautious of the restrictions of the basic economy option on your travel experience, even if it means saving some points and miles.

How to earn Virgin points
Flying Club partners with every major credit card rewards program. Therefore, it’s easy to boost your Virgin points balance if you have a rewards credit card that earns points or miles within the following programs:
- American Express Membership Rewards (points transfer at a 1:1 ratio)
- Bilt Rewards (1:1)
- Capital One (1:1)
- Chase Ultimate Rewards (1:1)
- Citi ThankYou Rewards (1:1)
- Marriott Bonvoy (3:1, with a 5,000-point bonus for transferring 60,000 points)
- Wells Fargo Rewards (1:1)
Note that Capital One miles transfer to Virgin Red, not directly to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. However, you can easily use your Virgin Red points with Flying Club by linking your Red and Flying Club accounts, where the combined Virgin points balance will show up in both.
Additionally, Flying Club often offers transfer bonuses, allowing you to potentially book a Saver fare for even less than 6,000 credit card points.
Bottom line
If you can find the lowest Saver prices, a 6,000‑point Virgin Atlantic flight to London (or Manchester) is a full‑service experience with seat selection, bags, meals, drinks and inflight entertainment that also earns tier points toward Flying Club status.
This is a comfortable economy-class experience across the Atlantic, and also a great opportunity to redeem Virgin points.
Add in that Virgin points are easy to earn, and these redemptions can offer better value than rival programs, even once you factor in carrier-imposed surcharges and the higher taxes and fees associated with departing the U.K.
