Former Manchester United midfielder Robbie Savage is on the verge of becoming Forest Green Rovers’ new manager.
The Welshman won the FA Youth Cup with United back in 1992 with legends like Ryan Giggs and David Beckham.
Nonetheless, he never played a first team match for the Red Devils and moved to Crewe Alexandra in 1994.
He would later go on to play numerous Premier League games with Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County.
Savage was appointed a member of the board of Macclesfield F.C. in 2020 and was then later given the role of first team manager in 2024. He has since led them to promotion to the National League North.
The Sun report that Savage could take a step up in the football pyramid as he “is on the verge of becoming the new manager of Forest Green Rovers.”
Due to Savage’s success at Macclesfield, he recently signed a new two-year deal at the club to remain as their head coach.
Despite this, he reportedly agreed a deal at Forest Green yesterday and the official announcement is expected later on today.
Savage will replace Steve Cotterill, who was fired on Thursday after failing to earn promotion from the National League.
It is also stated that “in preparation for his move, Savage has allegedly resigned from his role as Macclesfield’s director of football.”
Nonetheless, he is expected to remain a part-owner of the club.
Interestingly for United fans, “John Rooney, the younger brother of Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney, is allegedly expected to take over as Macclesfield boss.”
Rooney has spent the last two years as a player for the club but it is claimed he will now take the jump into management.
