Finalissima Argentina vs Spain: Reports suggest it might be played before the FIFA World Cup 2026

The Spanish Football Federation is actively working with UEFA and CONMEBOL to set a date and location for the long-awaited Finalissima between Spain and Argentina. The goal is to schedule the match before the 2026 World Cup, with both federations eager to showcase their champion teams in a global event.

New developments have emerged regarding the long-awaited Finalissima between Spain and Argentina. During an official event hosted by the Spain-US Chamber of Commerce and the Spanish Consulate in Miami, Rafael Louzán, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), discussed several topics, including the Club World Cup, potential refereeing changes in Spain, and the scheduling of the Finalissima.

Louzán, who is currently in Miami attending meetings with FIFA, expressed his satisfaction with the progress made during the trip. He highlighted the importance of maintaining strong relationships with both Spanish teams competing in the region, notably Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid. “It’s a strategic move to be present, especially supporting Real Madrid, but we haven’t forgotten Atlético either,” he noted.

Regarding the ongoing Club World Cup, Louzán acknowledged that while he hasn’t been able to follow every match live, he’s impressed by the turnout and atmosphere in the stadiums.

“Every new format needs time to adapt, but so far, the tournament is generating strong interest and energy,” he commented. He emphasized that the ultimate evaluation will come once the competition concludes—and that a Spanish club lifting the trophy would be the ideal outcome.

One of the most interesting parts of the discussion centered around refereeing innovations being tested at the Club World Cup. Louzán praised the new systems in place, calling them “surprising in a good way” and driven by common sense—something he believes soccer needs more of. He suggested that if these changes prove effective, Spain, which he described as a global reference point for officiating, should be ready to adopt them. “Soccer is full of passion and controversy, but if the adjustments help improve the game, they should be welcomed,” he added.

When asked about the Finalissima—an intercontinental showdown between the reigning champions of Europe and South America—Louzán confirmed that discussions are actively underway with both UEFA and CONMEBOL. While an official date and venue haven’t been finalized yet, the goal is to hold the match before the 2026 World Cup. He praised the excellent working relationship between the RFEF and Argentina’s AFA, stating that both sides are committed to making the match happen.
