Fallout star Ella Purnell has described the upcoming second season of the show as a “buddy road trip”.

The post-apocalyptic drama, based on the hit video game series of the same name, will return to Prime Video on December 17.

Purnell, who plays Lucy MacLean in the series, recently teased how her character grows closer to The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) in the second run of episodes.

“At times, it’s like [they] are on this buddy road trip,” the actor told Comic Book Resources. “And then other times, they’re so much at arms.”

She continued: “They’re trying to influence each other and see who’s going to rub off on whom. Is The Ghoul going to become good? Is Lucy going to become bad? Or are they going to be somewhere in the middle?”

Justin Theroux (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, The Devil Wears Prada 2) has joined the Fallout cast for season two, portraying Mr House – an important figure from The Ghoul’s past (via Deadline).

Purnell (Yellowjackets) then hinted at “a couple of really incredible scenes that are just these big, heavyweight bouts of intellect”, adding: “It was like doing Waiting For Godot in the middle of the whole thing.”

The Fallout TV adaptation was created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Season two will see Lucy MacLean and The Ghoul head to New Vegas in search of her father Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan), who was cryogenically frozen for hundreds of years.

A third season of Fallout has already been commissioned. Earlier this year, Aaron Moten (who plays Maximus) said the plan was for the show to run for as many as six seasons. “We’ve always known that we’re going to take our time with the development of the characters,” he said.

In a three-star review of season one, NME called Fallout a “fun yet flawed adaptation”. It concluded: “It’s a shame that everything takes so long to come together, because by the time it does, you’ll be thoroughly hooked.”

Fallout premiered in April 2024, and quickly became one of Prime Video’s most successful shows.

Meanwhile, a huge new update for Fallout 76 will introduce Walton Goggins’ The Ghoul to the hit game for the very first time.
