Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump goes back to hardcore as he joins Weekend Nachos on stage and Motion City Soundtrack on new single

Patrick Stump has returned to his hardcore roots with the Fall Out Boy vocalist making an appearance during Weekend Nachos’ show last Friday (September 12).

The powerviolence band were part of the same Chicago hardcore scene as Fall Out Boy, forming three years later, and Stump joined them when they played Seattle’s Vera Project to provide the cleaner vocals on their 2011 song ‘Jock Powerviolence’, just as he did on the studio track.

“Patrick Stump is one of the coolest guys ever,” wrote one fan on Instagram, while another joked: “It’s definitely Patrick Stump ‘cause who else is still rocking that hat in 2025.”

Stump’s not the only member of Fall Out Boy to keep in touch with their heavier beginnings. Drummer Andy Hurley is a member of hardcore and crust punk outfit SECT and metalcore band Racetraitor, of which Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz also used to be a member.

Stump has also rejoined forces with Motion City Soundtrack, Fall Out Boy’s contemporaries in the 2000s pop-punk scene, 20 years after he sang on their track ‘Everything Is Alright’. He features on their new single, ‘Particle Physics’, which comes from their first album in a decade, ‘The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World’. It’s set for release on Friday (September 19) – in the meantime, you can check out the single here.

As for Fall Out Boy themselves, they’ve just shared their 2005 cover of ‘Start Today’ by hardcore legends Gorilla Biscuits on streaming services as part of their 20th anniversary edition of ‘From Under The Cork Tree’, which will come out on October 17.

And, on September 28, they’ll be co-headlining Oceans Calling Festival in Ocean City, Maryland with Weezer. They play the festival’s Sunday, with Green Day and Noah Kahan headlining the Friday and Saturday respectively.

They won’t be joined by Joe Trohman, however, with the guitarist announcing in September that he’ll be taking “the rest of the year off” after undergoing hand surgery. Max Bernstein, a member of Taylor Swift‘s band, has been filling in for him in the meantime.
