Everything we know about ‘Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7’

'Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7'

Activision Blizzard surprised fans earlier this month by confirming the next Call Of Duty game will be a sequel to last year’s Black Ops 6.

New Call Of Duty games are released annually but Activision typically jumps between the various storylines. However the upcoming Black Ops 7 will be the first-ever consecutive release within the series.

The game will feature both solo and co-op campaign modes, alongside a “signature” multiplayer experience with brand new maps. The popular ‘Zombies’ mode is also getting a refresh with “the next twisted chapter of round-bases” mayhem. Black Ops 7 “delivers the full Call Of Duty package for our players, and we can’t wait to show the community more,” said Call Of Duty director Matt Cox earlier this year.

More details about Black Ops 7 are slowly being shared by developers – here’s everything we know so far.

When will Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 be released?

The game will definitely come out at some point this year but, beyond a 2025 launch window, Activision Blizzard haven’t confirmed a firm date.

However, new Call Of Duty games tend to follow a strict release pattern. Black Ops 6 was released on October 25 2024, Modern Warfare 3 launched November 10 2023 and Modern Warfare 2 came out October 28 2022.  Fans are expecting Black Ops 7 to drop within the same timeframe.

Black Ops 7 will be a Day One release for Xbox Game Pass subscribers and also be available for Xbox, PlayStation and PC. A Switch 2 version hasn’t been confirmed just yet but apparently the Call Of Duty team are working on making it happen.

When does Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 take place?

The Black Ops series has covered almost 100 years of shadowy conflicts, from the 1960s Cold War setting of the original to the futuristic Black Ops 2.

According to a press release, Black Ops 7 is set more than 40 years after the events of 6. “The year is 2035 and the world is on the brink of chaos, ravaged by violent conflict and psychological warfare following the events of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6. Wielding cutting-edge technology, David Mason and his team must fight back against a manipulative enemy who weaponises fear above all else.”

Milo Ventimiglia will take over the role of David Mason from Rich Macdonald, who voiced him in Black Ops 2. Michael Rooker will reprise his role of Mike Harper from the same game while newcomer Kiernan Shipka will play Emma Kagan, the super-smart CEO of a mysterious organisation known as The Guild who’ve been helping out in the world.

What’s new in Black Ops 7?

Over the past few weeks, rumours have spread that the next Call Of Duty game will feature jetpacks and Matrix-inspired wall-running. Stephanie Snowdon, Activision’s senior director of communications, has debunked that though. There will be “no wall-running and no jetpacks” in the new game, she said on the official Call Of Duty podcast.

Instead, Black Ops 7 will feature an “evolution” of the omnimovement feature which was introduced in Black Ops 6 and let players sprint, dive and slide in any direction, making the game feel like a ‘90s action movie.

Speaking to NME about introducing omnimovement, Snowden said: “I don’t know what it is about that 90s action hero feeling, but it’s absolutely something we were inspired by. We wanted the game to be grounded in that particular time and place, but it’s still Call Of Duty. It needs to feel big and it needs to have really kick ass moments.”

She has also recently revealed that a number of prestige rewards from Black Ops 6 hint at what’s to come in the new game which, for the first time in the franchise’s history, is set in Japan.

A full reveal for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 is due this “summer”.
