A whole host of announcements were made today as part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary Nintendo Direct – here’s everything you need to know

The original Super Mario Bros. game was released in Japan on September 13, 1985 and kickstarted one of the most popular and influential gaming franchises of all time. According to Nintendo, the main event of the Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary celebrations will be the sequel to 2023’s blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to launch April 3 2026 and will see the plucky plumber head to space. Fans are expecting the film to take heavy inspiration from the beloved Galaxy game, which originally launched in 2007 for the Wii and introduced Rosalina and the Luma to the franchise.

The Direct also confirmed Chris Pratt will once again voice Mario alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. More casting news will be announced soon but it seems Seth Rogan’s Donkey Kong won’t be involved.

To coincide with the movie, Super Mario Galaxy and the 2010 sequel will be re-released on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 next month (October 2).

Elsewhere, it was announced a new Mario Tennis Fever game will launch for the Nintendo Switch 2 on February 2 while Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to get a Switch 2 upgrade that will introduce a number of new multiplayer modes as well as the Meetup In Bellabel Park expansion. It’s set to launch Spring 2026.

The hour-long Nintendo Direct also announced a new Yoshi game, Yoshi And The Mysterious Book, will also launch next Spring.

Elsewhere in the Direct, Nintendo announced 14 VirtualBoy games will be made available to Nintendo Online subscribers while a new version of the controller will be available to buy from February next year. A Switch 2 version of Stardew Valley will launch this Fall while Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will release January 22.

An expansion for Donkey Kong Bananza is also on the way, letting players explore DK Island and work for the Void Company in new game mode ‘Emerald Rush’. The paid DLC is available later today.

In other news, Borderlands 4 is finally out but some fans aren’t impressed with the long-awaited looter shooter sequel.
