Deaf Club, one of the many bands led by Justin Pearson (The Locust, Swing Kids, Retox, etc), have announced their sophomore album, We Demand a Permanent State of Happiness. It comes out on September 19, and this one will be a split release between Pearson’s own Three One G label and Southern Lord.
The first single is “Nihilism for Dummies,” and it picks right up where the band’s 2022 debut LP Productive Disruption (and the Bad Songs Forever EP from that same year) left off, with exactly the kind of chaotic, “annoying” hardcore that Justin has long been known for. It rips, and it comes with a Rodrigo Espinosa-directed video that you can check out below.
In related news, Fuck Money (who released a split with Deaf Club last year) have a new self-titled album coming out on Three One G on August 15, and they just shared its second single “Belts.” It’s also a dose of delightfully jagged hardcore, and here’s what the band told Decibel about it:
In reference to the song’s lyrics. ‘Fashion Homicide’ is a death of an art form, artistic social movement, or original creation at the hand of commodification. This is our first single off our debut LP — and our first release after a year-long vanishing act. Now we’re back and we’re fucking stoked to finally drop this record. Our writing process is an act of capturing energy and our chaotic musical impulses then succinctly forming those moments into songs. That energy is steeped in our existential and sociopolitical realities, however, we’re never committed to one style or approach. We prefer to innovate. To honour that philosophy, we chose this track as the first single because it doesn’t sound like the rest of the album. It’s deceptively simple compared to the other songs. One of us even teared up while listening to it on the drive home from rehearsal, so we took that as a good sign. Needless to say, this song is important to us on an emotional and personal level. If you’re bold enough to press play you will be handsomely rewarded.
Stream that track below too.
In even more related news, Justin Pearson’s otherwise-defunct band All Leather are releasing a re-recorded, remixed, and/or reworked version of all of their songs for a new double LP called Amateur Surgery on Half-Hog Abortion Island, due to a fallout with their former record label, Steve Aoki’s label Dim Mak. The new release comes out on July 11 via Three One G, and you can read an interview on Lambgoat for much more on the fallout with Dim Mak.
