Coldplay’s classic ‘Sparks’ charts again after viral TikTok about Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson’s split

One of Coldplay’s earliest songs has hit the charts, debuting at Number 40 in the UK and 93 in the US, after a TikTok about Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson’s recent breakup went viral.

‘Sparks’, a track from the band’s 2000 debut album ‘Parachutes’, was never released as a single but has been a regular fixture of their ongoing ‘Music Of The Spheres’ world tour – including their shows at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas earlier this month.

A concertgoer posted a clip of Coldplay frontman Martin singing ‘Sparks’ and appearing visibly emotional. They wrote, “When you don’t want to believe the breakup rumors but this was Chris during ‘Sparks’ tonight,” adding in the caption, “Homie is heartbroken.”

The clip has amassed almost 25million views, as well as 3.4million likes and over 7,000 comments. “This is this generation’s Fleetwood Mac ‘Silver Springs’ live performance,” said one commenter, while another wrote, “Not him channelling the Coldplay I miss dearly with this performance.”

‘Sparks’ now soundtracks more than 500,000 TikToks and the number of Spotify streams has risen too – it’s now the second-most-streamed track on ‘Parachutes’ after Coldplay’s classic single ‘Yellow’, with over 1.4billion streams in total.

Martin, who has two children with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, began dating Johnson in 2017. It was revealed in 2024 that they’d been engaged for a few years, but People reported earlier this month that they’d ended their relationship.

Coldplay’s latest album, ‘Moon Music‘, was released in October 2024, and Martin told NME at the time that “When things appear overwhelmingly positive, that’s so often because it’s what the singer needs most.”

Martin also looked back on the band’s Glastonbury headline performance that summer, and said about the ideas they had for their set: “Right now, and since about 2008, if something lands in me as a song or as a good idea and it feels authentic, we’ll do it. It doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks. It’s very liberating, and it was probably started by Brian Eno’s philosophy when he came in to rebuild us. Since then, if I find something true and exciting, then we’ll go for it. It has led us to some really weird and amazing places.”

Johnson, meanwhile, is currently starring alongside Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal in the romance Materialists. She also appears in and co-produced the comedy Splitsville, which will come out in August.
