Real Madrid are reportedly planning a big-money move to sign Mason Greenwood as chaos continues to engulf Olympique Marseille – with Manchester United in line for a significant payday if the deal goes through.
Major Rebuild in Madrid
Los Blancos are experiencing a difficult season following the dismissal of Xabi Alonso in January and the appointment of Alvaro Arbeloa as caretaker until the summer.
This situation bears a striking resemblance to events at Old Trafford, where Michael Carrick has taken charge following Ruben Amorim’s departure as United’s head coach.
Both clubs are planning to appoint long-term successors once the campaign has finished, though there is growing clamour in Madrid and Manchester for the interim coaches to be given the jobs full-time. Regardless of who is in charge at the Bernabeu next season, however, Madrid are intent on a comprehensive overhaul of their side.
According to a report in Spain, the Liga giants have a €250 million plan in place, consisting of three high-profile signings in each area of the pitch, to transform the club’s fortunes this summer.
In defence, Madrid will target Borussia Dortmund powerhouse Nico Schlotterbeck; Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is seen as the solution to their midfield woes; and, lastly, Greenwood is the option to “bolster the attack”.
The 24-year-old forward’s versatility and ruthless finishing are of particular interest in the Spanish capital, given the uncertainty over the future of Brazilian stars Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo.
50% of the profits
Greenwood has become one of Ligue 1’s best players since joining Marseille in 2024, despite the controversy which ended his career in England.
Serious legal troubles made his position at Old Trafford untenable, forcing United to expedite his sale despite initial plans to reintegrate him into the first-team squad after he spent the previous season on loan at Getafe.
A £26.7m deal was struck with the French club, which included a 50% sell-on clause of any profits from a future sale – such as a big-money switch to a European juggernaut like Madrid.
The Englishman has returned 45 goals and 14 assists in 69 appearances for Marseille, leading the pack as Ligue 1’s top scorer this season.
Mason Greenwood: 2025/26 statistics
| Competition | Matches | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ligue 1 | 21 | 14 | 4 |
| Champions League | 8 | 3 | 1 |
| Trophee des Champions | 1 | 1 | 0 |
| Coupe de France | 3 | 5 | 3 |
| Total | 33 | 23 | 8 |
However, turmoil has engulfed the Stade Vélodrome this season, with manager Roberto De Zerbi – a huge fan of Greenwood – shocking French football by leaving the club last week, while sporting director Medhi Benatia offered to resign in the aftermath.
Benatia and Greenwood are understood to have clashed in a heated dispute, with both figures openly ignoring each other as a result. The fact that the executive has returned to the helm of Marseille, while the forward’s biggest supporter no longer remains, spells trouble for his future at the club.
Madrid are likely keeping close tabs on this fractious situation as they plot an offer worth “around €80 million” (£70m) to bring Greenwood back to Spain.
Final Thoughts – United’s pay day
A £70m switch to the Spanish capital would entitle United to half of the roughly £43m profit Marseille would make from the deal, translating to a windfall worth around £21.6m – almost the exact same figure from Greenwood’s original sale.
The Bradford native’s status as an academy graduate means any transfer fee banked from his sale constitutes ‘pure profit’ from a PSR perspective as well.
Ahead of a pivotal transfer window for the Red Devils this summer, a major cash injection for a player long forgotten at Old Trafford would be a game-changing boost as the club looks to re-establish itself at the summit of English football.
