Bon Iver announces new archival series, shares “Heavenly Father” live video

Bon Iver has announced a new archival series, VOLUMES, that will feature previously unheard live shows, demos, and other unreleased material. The debut installment is VOLUMES: ONE “Selections From Music Concerts 2019-2023 Bon Iver 6 Piece Band, due out April 3 via Jagjaguwar. It has Justin Vernon joined by his bandmates Andrew Fitzpatrick, Jenn Wasner, Justin Vernon, Matthew McCaughan, Michael Lewis, and Sean Carey, with live engineering from Xany Whitesel. Vernon started working on VOLUMES: ONE in 2020, and says, “This particular set of 10 songs is like, ‘Here, if you’ve never heard Bon Iver, or you have and you didn’t like it, this might be for you.’ This is what we became. This is really us at our best. This is it.”

The first single is a live version of “Heavenly Father,” recorded on November 5, 2022 at Mediolanum in Milan. Watch the video below.

After releasing the great SABLE, fABLE last year, Vernon told The Times, he’d be “very surprised” if he made another Bon Iver album, adding, “For the first time since I was 12, I’m not writing songs. There aren’t any in here. I have been writing since puberty and this is unfamiliar territory — but I am accepting it. It’s scary sometimes, but I’m just letting it happen.”
