At The Gates announce final album with Tomas Lindberg, ‘The Ghost of a Future Dead’ (new song & exclusive vinyl)

After the devastating loss of At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg to cancer at age 52 this past September, his bandmates confirmed that Tomas finished all of the vocals for At The Gates’ next album before his passing, and today that album has been announced. Titled The Ghost Of A Future Dead, it comes out April 24 via Century Media, and we have an exclusive “transparent black ice” vinyl variant up for pre-order in the BV shop. That’s limited to 500.

The album marks the return of lead guitarist/songwriter Anders Björler, who was absent on At The Gates’ last two albums, reuniting the same lineup that recorded the landmark 1995 album Slaughter of the Soul (and their great 2014 reunion album At War with Reality). It was produced by past collaborator Jens Bogren. Speaking about the album, Anders says:

Tomas completed the last songs in January 2024, the day before he went into hospital. We started to record the album, his surgery went well and we were in contact the whole time when we were in the studio. He was very excited to hear everything. We hadn’t really talked about a blueprint for the album, but it was Tomas’ idea, to do something more reminiscent of At War with Reality or Slaughter of the Soul. It’s not that, but in some instances it comes close! We were very focused on doing a very hard album – that was Tomas’ goal. It’s a hard-hitting album.

About the album title The Ghost Of A Future Dead, Anders adds, “The title reflects [Tomas’] situation, that he might not survive the illness. […] I don’t know if it was like a premonition of what was about to come or anything. But now it’s an eerie title, because he has passed. It makes the title even more real somehow.”

The first taste of The Ghost Of A Future Dead is opening track “The Fever Mask,” which sounds like classic At The Gates. From Anders’ brutal yet melodic riffage to Tomas’ fierce bark to the relentless rhythm section, this is everything you want from this band.

In the band’s own words, “‘The Fever Mask’ was one of the final songs written for the album and quickly stood out as the natural choice for both the opening track and the first single for The Ghost of a Future Dead. It perfectly captures the essence of At The Gates, blending raw energy, strong melody and beautiful lyrics by Tomas.” Check it out below.
