Argentina: workers at main pediatric hospital say care ‘under threat’

The Garrahan Hospital, Argentina’s largest paediatric health centre — particularly renowned for its treatment of children with cancer — is a prime example of Javier Milei’s chainsaw-style budget cuts and is now on the verge of collapse. Its budget has not been increased since Milei took office in December 2023, while inflation continues to soar (currently at 130%).

The critical situation of this prestigious public hospital — which provides 600,000 consultations a year and performs more than 10,000 surgeries, mainly on children from across the country — is seen as a symbol of Milei’s relentless assault on the State and public services.
