Andrew Ranken, The Pogues drummer, dies at 72

Andrew Ranken, who was drummer and founding member of The Pogues, has died at age 72. No cause of death was given, but Rolling Stone UK reports he had been in ill health for a few years, suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Ranken, drummer, founding member, and heartbeat of The Pogues,” the band wrote on social media. “Andrew, thank you for everything, for your friendship, your wit and your generosity of spirit, and of course for the music, forever a true friend and brother. Our thoughts and love are with his family at this sad and difficult time.”

Known in the band as “The Clobberer,” Ranken was a founding member of the Pogues and played on all seven of their studio albums, including Red Roses for Me, Rum, Sodomy and The Lash, and If I Should Fall From Grace With God.

Rest easy, Andrew.
