Amyl & The Sniffers invite fans to “have a drink on us” after free Melbourne show cancelled

Amyl and the Sniffers were scheduled to play a free, all-ages show at Melbourne’s Fed Square today (11/14), but it was cancelled right before they would’ve taken the stage. Organizers said that “multiple breaches of the perimeter fences caused a very high risk of crowd crushes,” forcing the cancellation. “It was unsafe for the show to continue,” their statement continues. “We did not take this decision lightly, and are deeply sorry for an disappointment caused, however tonight could simply not continue. Our sincere apologies to the band and their fans.”

The band responded in a series of posts on social media, first writing in a story, “We are so sorry the show is cancelled due to the event not organising the proper security and barriers and the barriers being broken in has made them deem it unsafe to play. We are fuming and shattered and so so so so so so so so so sorry!!! Fuck cunt.”

“Venue needs to go out with a statement but basically all the fences were allegedly stormed making it unsafe for the punters so police shut it down !!!! :/,” they wrote in another story. “My heart is but we want you to be safe too. Didn’t expect this turn out, so thank you for coming and supporting us. Gonna go get black out drunk somewhere in mourning.”

“You simply cannot imagine the tantrum I am having,” Amyl wrote in another story.

The band also posted a video where they invited fans to have a drink on them with the five thousand dollar tab they’d put at several local venues: The Tote, Last Chance Rock N Roll Bar, The Labour in Vain Hotel, Hell’s Kitchen, The John Curtin Hotel, Cherry Bar, and The Old Bar. “Just have some fun tonight,” they say.
