Manchester United are continuing to back their under-fire head coach Ruben Amorim.
Struggles
The Red Devils have collected just four points from their four league games, the club’s worst start to a Premier League season.
Amorim reportedly remains convinced that he can turn things around at the club but there are a sea of doubters in the media.
Growing criticism has emerged for his continued desire to play a 3-4-3 and his unwillingness to deviate from the plan.
There have even been reports that United are already looking at replacements and have AFC Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola on their radar.
United remain supportive
The Telegraph report that United are still supportive of Amorim however, and point to the underlying statistics as a sign of improvement, in spite of the team languishing in 14th place.
The paper states that, “Ruben Amorim retains the backing of Manchester United’s hierarchy, who share the manager’s view that the club’s worst start to a Premier League season for 33 years has masked some of the improvements in the team.”
Some of these statistics include “United currently rank first in the Premier League for total shots and touches in the opposition box, second for expected goals and open play xG, fourth for shots on target and fifth for passes played into the box, metrics that are all significantly up on last season.”
What’s more, these paint the picture of a team who have been attacking and dominating but clearly struggling to put away chances as they have only scored four goals in four games and drawn a blank against both Arsenal and Manchester City.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that their shot conversion is just 5.7%, the fourth worst in the Premier League.
Whilst the club ownership is very much aware results must change immediately, “the club’s powerbrokers believe performances have been better than the results suggest and that the data shows the fundamentals are all better.”
United also note that the club has been unable to play its four new signings together and the injuries of Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha are a significant blow.
The Red Devils return to action on Saturday when they take on Chelsea at Old Trafford at 17:30 BST.
