Amorim reject confident of bombshell return to Old Trafford this summer – report

Manchester United’s position on Andre Onana is clear as the goalkeeper takes a big call on his future with the club.

Onana’s decision

Onana sealed a season-long loan switch to Trabzonspor last summer after he lost his place in the team.

Since joining the Red Devils in 2023, he has been unable to shake a reputation for costly mistakes, with errors becoming the defining feature of his time between the posts.

Now-sacked head coach Ruben Amorim ditched him, preferring to start the current campaign with Altay Bayindir as the number one shot-stopper. Bayindir was named in the starting XI for the first six Premier League games, with Onana making a sole appearance in the humiliating EFL Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby Town.

Bayindir’s own shaky performances prompted United to dip into the market for a new goalkeeper. The club snapped up Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day. Lammens’ arrival cast further doubts on Onana’s future. The Cameroonian was subsequently allowed to leave for the Super Lig.

He enjoyed a promising start to life at Trabzonspor but things have unravelled over the past few weeks. A report covered by The Peoples Person last weekend relayed that it’s becoming increasingly unlikely that Trabzonspor will make Onana’s stay permanent.

It was stated that patience with Onana is wearing thin due to his mistake-strewn performances.

Now, The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson reports that Onana has not given up on his United career and wants to challenge Lammens for a starting berth.

According to Jackson, Onana believes he will be given the opportunity to stake his claim in the team.

The newspaper further explains, “Despite Onana’s understanding that he will have a chance to compete for the No 1 jersey, he faces a struggle to reclaim it given the impressive form of Lammens.”

United’s position

In a further blow to Onana, a separate report has noted that United have no plan to include him in their plans.

Alex Crook of talkSPORT writes, “With the Turkish side unlikely to try to keep him permanently, talkSPORT understands Man United have no plans to reintegrate the Cameroonian international into their first-team.”

“Old Trafford officials know they will need to take a hit on the near £50million they paid Inter Milan for Onana at the behest of Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2023.”

Crook adds that United are set to move for a new goalkeeper to replace Onana, a decision driven by Tom Heaton’s expiring contract and the likelihood of Bayindir also departing this summer.
