United injury boost: Amorim favourite finally returns to training, Carrick hoping for big things from him – report

Manchester United need all hands on deck if they are to finish in the Champions League places come the end of the season.

Michael Carrick‘s arrival has certainly helped, with the Red Devils unbeaten in their last six games, which include wins over Manchester City, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.

But the caretaker head coach cannot continue to work his magic if injuries keep piling up every week.

For the Everton win, the 20-time English league champions were without Lisandro Martinez, in addition to the absence of Matthijs de Ligt, Patrick Dorgu, and Mason Mount.

Mason Mount rejoins training

As revealed by The Manchester Evening News, the Englishman is closing in on a return to action and has joined team training ahead of Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

However, as things stand, the former Chelsea star is unlikely to make the cut for Sunday’s game, but there is a chance he can feature against Newcastle in midweek.

“Michael Carrick is hoping Mason Mount can deliver a big finish to the season after the £55million midfielder returned to training ahead of Sunday’s fixture with Crystal Palace.

“The Manchester United midfielder has missed the last four games under Carrick, and although the clash with the Eagles could come too soon for him, he is in contention for a return to the squad next week.”

Mason Mount gearing up for big finish to the season

Even though the United No.7 has hardly featured under Carrick, the former midfield legend is hopeful of a big finish to the season from the England international.

“Mason is getting closer, he’s on the grass, he’s looking to be around it pretty soon,” Carrick said. “We’ve had to be patient, he’s a good player, so we’re looking after him and making sure he’s ready for a big finish to the season.”

Martinez is also expected to miss the game against the Eagles, so Leny Yoro is likely to earn another start after an impressive game against the Toffees last time out.

As for De Ligt, there are murmurs he could be available from next month. Hopefully, everyone can return soon so that Carrick has a full squad to choose from in his endeavour to guide United back into the Champions League.
