Carrick’s United chasing another impressive feat against side who have been a thorn in previous managers’ side

Manchester United take on Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon at 14:00 GMT.

The Red Devils have faced the Eagles 69 times in their history.

United have won 42 times, while there have been 13 victories for Palace.

There have also been 14 draws between the two sides. Here are three storylines to get you in the mood for the match.

Chance for third

United have been making significant ground in 2026 by winning five out of their last six Premier League matches.

This run has seen them rise into the top four, and they are now within striking distance of the top three.

Aston Villa’s surprise 0-2 loss away to relegation battlers Wolverhampton Wanderers has given United a chance to rise into third place, should they win on Sunday.

Villa are three points ahead of Michael Carrick’s side but have a worse goal difference, so any victory would see the Red Devils leapfrog them.

United last finished third in the 2022-2023 season under Erik ten Hag, and it would represent a fine achievement this season if they can manage it.

Poor record vs Palace

Winning will be no easy task, though, as the Red Devils have not completed the double over the Eagles since the 2017-2018 season.

United did win 2-1 at Selhurst Park earlier in the season and will be hoping for another three points tomorrow.

In fact, the BBC report that, “Crystal Palace have won four of their last six away league games against Manchester United (losing two), having won just two of their first 22 visits to Old Trafford (3 draws 17 losses).”

Michael Carrick chasing another record

The Red Devils’ new interim coach has made an incredible impression on results.

If his side were to win on Sunday, he would go within one win of another impressive record.

Michael Carrick “has won all four of his home league games in charge (one in 2021, three in 2026) – only Frank O’Farrell has won his first five home games in charge of the Red Devils, doing so in 1971 (won first six).”
