Carrick confirms United will be without influential leader for Palace’s visit to Old Trafford – report

Manchester United had to face the challenge of Everton without two of their best defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

The Dutchman has been missing in action for three months now, and it came as a huge blow in the build-up when the Argentine picked up a knock.

Since Michael Carrick came in, the World Cup winner’s partnership with Harry Maguire has formed the bedrock of United’s impressive resurgence, with the team keeping two clean sheets in five games.

With the Toffees expected to bombard the box with crosses and set-piece deliveries, the caretaker head coach turned to Leny Yoro to replace the former Ajax ace.

Lisandro Martinez out of Sunday’s game

The Frenchman did a fantastic job as United kept their third clean sheet, and he will likely be needed on Sunday as well, when Crystal Palace come to Old Trafford.

While Martinez’s injury is not serious, Carrick revealed that it will take a bit more time for him to regain full fitness.

In an interview with club media, the former midfield legend explained, “Patrick is a little bit further down the line really, in terms of a number of weeks but he’s progressing well.

“Licha is a lot closer than Patrick is. It will be a matter of days hopefully, it won’t be too long. We’ll assess him over the next day or two, and see where he is.

Poor injury record

“Mason [Mount] is getting closer, Matthijs [de Ligt] is a little bit behind Mason but, if we can get the boys back, we’ll get them back as soon as we can.”

This indicates the head coach is expecting Lisandro Martinez to make the squad for the game against Newcastle next week.

The 28-year-old’s body seems to be breaking down at regular intervals due to the couple of serious injuries he has suffered since joining the 20-time English league champions.

Despite his poor injury record, the Red Devils seem to have no intention of parting ways with him amid interest from Barcelona.

As relayed by The Peoples Person, United want Lisandro Martinez to stay for longer than his current deal, which expires in 2027. That effectively means contract extension talks could be in the pipeline.
