Red-hot United striker with six goals in his last three games unlikely to be part of the first team next season – report

Manchester United academy graduate Chido Obi must have been disappointed to learn that Ruben Amorim would not count on him this season.

While the 18-year-old failed to find the back of the net in any of his eight appearances for the first team last season, he did show flashes of his undoubted potential.

There were talks of a loan exit, but the Red Devils decided to utilise him for the various age group sides.

The young Dane has used his first-team expulsion as fuel, scoring for fun for both the U21s and U18s. In 16 starts across all competitions, he has 14 goals and four assists, a goal involvement every 86 minutes.

Chido Obi has been in red-hot form

He scored four in the most recent PL2 encounter against Leicester City, while scoring in back-to-back games for Darren Fletcher‘s side.

United are very happy with his progress, especially with the improvement in his work-rate off the ball. The club view him as a crucial component of both age-group sides as they eye four academy trophies this season.

Naturally, the ex-Arsenal academy product would have hoped to have caught Michael Carrick’s eye by now, with the caretaker coach a regular at academy games.

But according to The Daily Mail, the 20-time English league champions are considering a summer loan to further his development in a competitive environment.

Chido Obi to be loaned out

“United made a conscious decision in January that they would not entertain loan offers for Chido Obi. The 18-year-old would instead be the focal point for both the Under 18s and the Under 21s, and be put in a position to fire United to four trophies.

“That extra responsibility, as well as forcing Obi to develop his game to go beyond physically bullying opponents, as he has at younger age groups, came together perfectly on Monday when he scored four goals against Leicester City.

“He is benefitting immensely from switching between the age-groups, and while a year ago he was mixing with the first-team, the feeling is that taking a step back will help him in the long run.

“A loan move is viewed as much more likely going in to next season, but many at United feel vindicated to have made Obi a priority across two age-groups this season.”

With Benjamin Sesko expected to be the starting striker next season, and United expected to bring in an experienced backup, it would not be the worst decision to send Chido Obi out on loan.
