“I’ll never forget it”: Cunha reveals the unforgettable moment that kickstarted United’s Carrick-era turnaround

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha has pinpointed the exact moment that kick-started the club’s resurgence under Michael Carrick.

United are currently in a rich vein of form, having gone unbeaten in their last six games. The Red Devils remain the only Premier League side to taste defeat since the turn of the year. This run has coincided with Carrick’s appointment as interim head coach, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.

United’s most recent result, Monday’s 1-0 win vs. Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, restored them to fourth place in the table, three points above Chelsea and Liverpool and three points adrift of Aston Villa in third.

United have looked like a completely different outfit under Carrick. While they have mostly played swashbuckling football, their performance against Everton proved they can dig deep and grind out a result when necessary.

Cunha played a key role in the victory, delivering a sublime diagonal pass to Bryan Mbeumo, who registered the assist for Benjamin Sesko.

The Brazilian spoke to Globo Esporte and explained that Carrick’s status as a United legend has played a big role in the team’s transformation.

The summer signing from Wolves also highlighted the triumph over Arsenal as the catalyst that set everything in motion.

Cunha’s remarks

Cunha told the news outlet about Carrick, “He is someone who was a multiple champion with Manchester United as a player.”

“He won the Premier League several times. He was coached by Alex Ferguson, who is a legend of the sport. He knows what it takes to win here.”

“I believe that, more than tactical issues, Carrick adds a lot from the side of someone who knows the paths representing the club.”

Cunha continued, “It is a very strong team, but we played with a lot of courage at the Emirates. Even when we went behind, at no moment did we lower our heads or give up on our game plan. It is about winning mentality, about believing in what the coach prepared during the week.”

“We need that, to believe we can face anyone. It was one of those games that mark a career. I will never forget it.”

The 26-year-old admitted that he has one eye on the upcoming World Cup with the Brazil national team.

“Of course the main focus is helping Manchester United, but I cannot hide the motivation of defending the Brazilian national team, especially at a World Cup. I do everything to be in that group, to represent that shirt. It is every player’s dream.”

“The competition is strong, everyone knows the quality of Brazil’s forwards, but I trust in myself and in my work. I am living a good moment here at United and I will keep working at the maximum to maintain this phase and even improve it.”

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Cunha is one of a handful of Brazilian players who are guaranteed to be in Brazil’s World Cup squad.
