Historic parliamentary vote underway in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is holding its first parliamentary elections since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024, with voters electing 300 lawmakers directly and 50 women from party lists. The main contenders are the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Islamist-led Jamaat coalition, as Hasina’s Awami Party has been barred from participating.
