“That’s good to hear”: Neville pinpoints his feelings on what United should do in managerial search

Manchester United have been a completely different team in recent weeks.

Michael Carrick effect

The Red Devils have won their last four games with Michael Carrick as head coach.

They have also come against three of the traditional big six clubs: Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

There has also been a victory against an impressive Fulham side. United are now preparing to face West Ham United on Tuesday, looking for their fifth win on the bounce.

Carrick as next manager

Despite the excitement over Carrick’s performances so far, he is still the interim manager and United are conducting their search for another permanent head coach to replace the Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has given his view on the situation on The Gary Neville Podcast.

He claimed, “I made my position clear a few weeks ago and what I’m not going to do is repeat it every week, but what I did, I actually spoke to the club, because ultimately the club get asked all the time from journalists and broadcasters, what’s the position of the club.”

Neville continued, “it’s a very difficult situation, you’ve got a massive movement now with what’s happened towards giving Carrick the job, saying that really he should be considered. That’s only going to build the more that he wins and the more that he gets closer to Champions League football.”

The former United defender claimed that he has been quite impressed by what the club has told him regarding the recruitment of a new long-term head coach.

He explained, “I have to say I thought their answer was pretty good. They said they’ve actually begun the process now, starting to look for another manager, which I thought right. That’s good to hear because you need to plan for everything. They’ve started the process of speaking to and looking at other managers, building all the sorts of data and analysing who should be the next manager of the football club.”

The pundit also explained that the club are looking to stick to their guns and hire someone towards the end of the season, not to be making an appointment in the next couple of months based on short-term results.

Neville explained that should Carrick continue to impress, he will inevitably throw his hat into the ring but will have to go up against big-name managers like Thomas Tuchel for the role.

The pundit also suggested that Carrick might even reject the chance to manage the club long term if he feels it is not in the “best interest of the football club.”
