22 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

RATBOYS – “PENNY IN THE LAKE”

Ratboys’ incredible new album Singin’ to an Empty Chair’ arrives this week, and we’ll be talking more about that soon but first here’s one more single.

ROBYN – “SEXISTENTIAL (ARCA’S TAKE)”

Robyn shared a new remix of the title track of her new album from Arca. “Grateful for the visionary Alejandra is and her version of this track,” she says, “and the joy of our conversations leading up to this. This shit is sooo sexistential.”

ALEXIS TAYLOR – “FOR A TOY”

“’For A Toy’ is about self-destructive behaviour – but it’s not clear what the toy or plaything or distraction is that keeps getting in the way of the path the protagonist wants to be on,” says Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor of his new solo single. “It’s amusing to me that a song which shares a lyric with a powerful grunge track by Neil Young could sound this pretty. The chorus explodes in an unexpected way with a lot of sonic bombast – so the song really opens up with drama. It’s as much about bathos as it is about pathos. There is some humour here, in the grandeur of self-pity. But, most importantly, this song is stuck repeatedly asking ‘WHY DO I’ do this? Music itself can be a plaything or toy that you can get hooked on – as much as the songs can be about getting hooked on something, or someone, or some pattern of behaviour. Elizabeth Wight adds glacial, ghostly vocal tones and interjections, which are closer to her opera singer upbringing than the deep goth house worlds she is known for with Mike Simonetti as Pale Blue. She brings the song to life.” Alexis’ new album Paris In The Spring is out March 13.

LILY KONIGSBERG – “IS IT OVER?” (DEMO)

Lily Konigsberg (Palberta, My Idea) has shared her first new music since 2021, “It It Over,” from Wharf Cat Records’ new Scribble Benefit Compilation, which is due out on March 6; funds raised will go towards providing mental health services to musicians. “‘Is It Over?’ is an outtake from my next album that was written in a time of desperation,” Lily says. “I really wanted to feel better, but I was really deep in an intense time, so feeling better felt very far away. Life is extremely challenging sometimes, and talking to someone about it can be an invaluable life-line. That’s why what Scribble is doing is so important and I was happy to contribute to this benefit compilation.”

MANDY, INDIANA – “SICKO! (FEAT. BILLY WOODS)”

Mandy, Indiana’s second album, URGH, is out Friday and here’s one last preview and it features billy woods. They say: “Social media has changed the way we consume art and music, often meaning that we rarely see a full music video in the way it was intended to be experienced. For ‘Sicko!’ we wanted to try something different, leaning into the way people consume art on social platforms. We asked creators to make 30 second films based around ‘sickness’ as a theme, drawing inspiration from the track. It was an experiment to see what a music video might be like if we present distinct, often conflicting, visual styles side-by-side. The videos were then matched with different sections of the track in a sequence that felt right. By moving through and watching each short, you will hear the full song.”

VOXTROT – “MY PEACE”

Voxtrot’s anticipated first album in 19 years arrives later this month, and they’ve given us another preview with “My Peace.” “For me, the video is a love letter to Texas — and maybe even more specifically to the town of Lockhart, where Matt, Jason, and I live,” Ramesh Srivastava says. “It’s a strange but magical little world we inhabit, populated by dusty roads, corn silos, and storefronts that have not changed much since the days of cattle drives Texas is a crazy place, and while I have a complicated relationship with it, deep down I love it because it’s my home, and I feel compelled to stay and fight the slow battle of being my true self within this often challenging environment. As I noted to photographer Annie Gunn when we were conceptualizing the album cover art, during these past few socially and politically tense years, I have felt sustained by the joy of making music out in the sticks with my bandmates. It really has felt like we are dreamers in exile.”

WHITNEY JOHNSON, LIA KOHL, AND MACIE STEWART – “DAWN | PULSE”

Chicago musicians Whitney Johnson (Matchess), Lia Kohl, and Macie Stewart (Finom) announce their debut album as a trio. It’s titled BODY SOUND and will be out March 20 via International Anthem. Here’s the very droney, cool first single.

CROOKED FINGERS – “INSOMNIA”

“I had a heart attack back in October. Doctor says it partly happened because I didn’t get enough sleep over the years,” Eric Bachmann says of his new Crooked Fingers song. “Insomnia is something I’ve dealt with for as long as I can remember. Feels like if I fall asleep I might miss something. I wrote this song about it. The plucky, winding guitar part that enters after the first verse represents a little venomous snake, dancing in slithers through a pile of unknowing victims slumbering on the beach in the tropical moonlight. I’m in love with the shimmering line of light the moon makes against the ocean when you’re on the beach late at night.” Crooked Fingers first album in 15 years is out February 27 via Merge.

LANDOWNER – “NORMAL RETURNS TO NORMAL”

Post-punk minimalists Landowner release new album Assumption on February 27 and they’ve just shared another wirey bit of angst from it.

SHORELINE – “YOUTHFULLY NAIVE”

BOSSE-DE-NAGE – “IN THE NAME OF THE MOTH”

Bosse-de-Nage have shared another taste of their upcoming album Hidden Fires Burn Hottest, and this one makes a pretty clear departure from the band’s usual atmospheric black metal. Very intriguing stuff.
