Carrick and Wilcox perform dramatic U-turn on transfer policy to fuel pursuit of CL place – report

Manchester United have experienced a hectic few days following the dismissal of former manager Ruben Amorim.

Whirlwind days

After a week of speculation, it was announced that United had decided to appoint former player and interim manager Michael Carrick until the end of the season.

One of the reasons Ruben Amorim was sacked was an alleged falling out with sporting director Jason Wilcox over a lack of transfers in the January window.

United were in the race for Antoine Semenyo, but the African forward decided to move to Manchester City instead of the red side of Manchester.

Despite interest in the winger, reports have largely stated that United will not be dipping into the transfer market until the summer. It is believed they would only make a move if a player fits into their long-term strategy or if a major summer target became available this month.

However, this may not be the case after all, according to recent reports.

United targeting a left winger

Football Insider reports that sources have told them “Man United are exploring a move to sign a new left-winger in this month’s transfer window.”

It is believed that “new interim manager Michael Carrick and the club’s recruitment team, led by Jason Wilcox, are scouring the market for suitable loan options.”

The report goes on to state that, “a left-winger has emerged as the priority position for the new United boss following talks with Wilcox in the wake of his arrival this week.”

Formation change

Ruben Amorim’s insistence on using a 3-4-3 formation meant United did not use traditional attacking wide players. As a result, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony were both sold in the summer, while Marcus Rashford was also sent on loan to FC Barcelona, gutting the team of wingers.

Carrick is likely to employ a 4-2-3-1 formation and will need attacking players who are comfortable out wide. Problematically, Amad and Bryan Mbeumo are both more comfortable on the right.

Whilst Matheus Cunha started out wide versus Burnley, his natural position is more tucked in, in more central areas.
