Katy Perry joined her boyfriend, Justin Trudeau – the former Prime Minister of Canada – for a diplomatic lunch with the former Japanese Prime Minister.

Details of a romance between Perry and Trudeau were rumoured all summer, and, back in October, the Daily Mail published photographs of the pair embracing and kissing on the upper deck of a yacht. Towards the end of October, the couple officially confirmed their relationship with their first public appearance together in Paris.

On Thursday (December 4), a photo of Trudeau and Perry posing alongside former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife, Yuko, after a formal lunch together, went viral on X/Twitter.

In the now widely shared image, the two couples smile together in front of a Christmas tree. Kishida wrote, (translated from Japanese): “Former Canadian Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau visited Japan with his partner and joined my wife and me for lunch,” the politician wrote.

“During [Trudeau’s] time as [Canadian] prime minister, we met multiple times as fellow leaders,” continued Kishida, who now serves in the House of Representatives of Japan. “I am delighted that we continue to maintain this friendship in this way.”

Trudeau then responded, writing that it was “great to see” Kishida. “Katy and I were so glad to have the chance to sit down with you and Yuko,” he added. “Thank you, Fumio, for your friendship and your continued commitment to both the international rules-based order and to a better future for everyone.”

Fans have since been reacting to the post, with one writing: “This might be the craziest hard launch in the history of the free world”, and another adding: “the concept of hard launching your new gf by meeting the former pm of japan”

In other Perry news, the singer is set to receive $1.8million (£1.3million) from a disabled war veteran following a lengthy legal row.

Earlier this year, Perry also reflected on her “rollercoaster year” and said she was done “forcing” her career. “Whatever comes next, I’m letting it unfold naturally,” she said. “No forcing, no controlling – just trusting the angels, the fans, and the music to guide me where I’m meant to go. Please know this: my love for you is unconditional, and I couldn’t do any of this without you.”

She released her seventh album ‘143’ in September 2024, which NME awarded two stars and described as “a serviceable but slightly dull collection on which Perry struggles to relocate her old sense of fun”.

Controversies surrounding the album included her choice to work with Dr. Luke despite the abuse and assault allegations against him, and the supposed male gaze-centric nature of her single ‘Woman’s World’.

Meanwhile, Perry is set to play a series of outdoor shows in the UK and Ireland next summer, including a performance at Cardiff Castle.
