“He makes no secret of that”: Club chief speaks out on future of master tactician tipped to replace Amorim at United

Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland just before the international break has helped Ruben Amorim sit a little easier at the Theatre of Dreams.

The Portuguese head coach is yet to live up to expectations since taking charge of the Premier League giants in November last year.

Amorim had won the league twice with Sporting during his four-year spell, registering a 71% win ratio. He was expected to work his magic and resolve United’s issues but so far, it wasn’t to be.

50 games later, the Portuguese has managed just 20 wins, and a poor start to the season, that sees the Red Devils sit 10th in the Premier League, has only added to his woes. Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently suggested that Amorim would be given three years to implement his plans at the Theatre of Dreams.

But that hasn’t stopped the rumours, with multiple candidates still linked as possible replacements, including Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

Glasner has transformed Crystal Palace

Glasner’s impressive work at Selhurst Park has seen him emerge as a strong candidate for the hot seat at Old Trafford. The Austrian manager won the FA Cup last season and the Community Shield at the beginning of this campaign.

The Eagles have lost just one game across competitions this season and are sixth in the Premier League table after seven games.

Glasner also deploys the 3-4-3 system that Amorim is attempting to implement at United, which makes him an enticing prospective candidate for the job.

Meanwhile, the Austrian’s contract expires at the end of the season, which has only added fuel to the speculation.

Selhurst Park stay on the cards

Speaking to talkSPORT, Crystal Palace co-owner Steve Parish revealed that he has held preliminary talks with Glasner regarding a new deal.

“Yeah, we’ve had some early conversations. I mean we would love to keep Oliver, we’re building something. I think for Oliver it’s about the conditions being right,” said Parish.

“It’s about everything being in a way that he enjoys his work and he finds the conditions favourable to achieve. Oliver wants to win things. He makes no secret of that.

“That’s what he’s in football for. He’s in football for those days where we give all that pleasure to the fans and we do as well. So if we can align those interests then hopefully we can make something happen.”

If Glasner ends up signing a new deal with Crystal Palace, prising him away from Selhurst Park will be far from easy.

United, however, will be hoping that Amorim can build on that 2-0 victory over Sunderland, and get his side firing on all cylinders. That would help put a lid on any talk of a managerial change at the Theatre of Dreams.
