‘Weapons’ prequel about Aunt Gladys confirmed by director Zach Cregger

Weapons director Zach Cregger has confirmed that a prequel is in the works which centres on Aunt Gladys.

It comes after reports emerged last month that Cregger was already in early talks with Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema over a potential prequel film focusing on Amy Madigan’s character.

Now, he has confirmed the origin story in a new interview with Fangoria. “It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it,” Cregger said. “There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit.”

The director also revealed that the talks were also independent of Weapons‘ box office and critical success, confirming that he had the idea before the film was released.

He added: “I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”

While Weapons is a non-linear story that explores multiple viewpoints of an entire classroom’s worth of children mysteriously going missing on the same night, the film never explores Gladys’ perception of the events.

The prequel film is supposedly going to explore her backstory and what leads to her treacherous role in the children’s disappearance. Gladys’ backstory was reportedly part of the original Weapons draft, but was cut by director Cregger due to length constraints.

The director currently has a number of other projects on his slate – including an upcoming Resident Evil film, and an original film he’s working on titled Flood.

Speaking about a potential prequel, Madigan also previously told Deadline: “It’s not that I discount it, but in this business, nothing’s real ’til it’s real. I just had such a great time working with Zach and being inside that brain of his. That’s really the gift of how the movie came out.

“The other stuff has to do with all sorts of conversations that I would never be privy in and business things like that. But, you know, I love Gladys, so I’ll leave it at that.”
