Scott McTominay secures impressive finish in Ballon d’Or rankings to further deepen United’s regret

Former Manchester United academy product Scott McTominay has been voted 18th in the 2025 Ballon d’Or list.

Incredible season in Italy

McTominay was sold to SSC Napoli in the summer of 2024 after spending his entire career up to that point at United.

He had played 255 times for the Red Devils, scoring 29 goals.

The Scotsman enjoyed a meteoric rise in Naples though, becoming a catalyst for his side’s Serie A title win.

The 28-year-old scored 13 goals in all competitions and was named Serie A’s most valuable player last year.

The Scot was also named in the Serie A team of the season after his goalscoring heroics.

He has already opened his account for this season, scoring one goal in Napoli’s opening four matches.

Ballon d’Or

Owing to his fine season in Italy, he was incredibly nominated for the Ballon d’Or and finished a respectable 18th.

He finished one place ahead of Champions League winning midfielder Joao Neves and other world famous stars such as Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland.

McTominay was the only United academy graduate on the list. Former United star and youth product, David Beckham, was runner-up for the Ballon d’Or in 1999.

The only United academy products to win the prestigious award were Sir Bobby Charlton in 1966 and George Best in 1968.

McTominay will hoping he can match last season’s achievements as Napoli currently sit top of the Serie A standings with four wins from four in the league. The only blemish being the 0-2 defeat to Manchester City in the opening round of Champions League games.
