While Manchester United endured a season to forget last time out, Amad was one of their shining lights and his performances have catapulted him to stardom since.
The Ivorian netted 11 times, while registering 10 assists, and has since become a first-team regular under Ruben Amorim, after Erik ten Hag inexplicably chose to ignore him earlier.
Despite the 23-year-old possessing bags of attacking talent, the Portuguese tactician prefers to utilise him as a right wingback.
The former Atalanta starlet has not started the new season in the same devastating fashion, while his lack of defensive acumen has been questioned at times, something that was expected given he is an attacker first and foremost.
Amad is yet to convince Amorim
And following the disappointing Manchester derby defeat, Givemesport have revealed that Amorim is not happy with Amad in the right wingback position.
Which is why he opted to start Noussair Mazraoui, fresh from returning from an injury, in that position on Sunday.
The head coach is much happier with Patrick Dorgu on the opposite flank. While the young Dane has loads of energy, is end product exasperated the away fans at the Etihad.
“While Patrick Dorgu is proving to be the athletic, hard-running left-sided wing-back Ruben Amorim imagined, on the right flank Amad has yet to convince the United manager he’s the answer.
“Amad has the attacking capabilities to unlock defences but going the other way, when United are on the back foot, the youngster has yet to convince.”
Given the team have won only once this season, conceding nine goals in five games, it is clear that the backline is coming under intense pressure and they are currently unable to deal with it.
Amorim’s system making very little sense
But surprisingly, it was Amorim who chose to change Amad’s position, from an attacking midfielder to a wingback.
The 3-4-3 system places a lot of attacking duties on the wingback, and Amad is the best of the bunch with the other options being Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot.
Both might be better defensively, they are certainly not as effective going forward. Which is why the head coach’s refusal to tweak his system is an even more puzzling situation.
Should Amorim now drop the “undroppable” Amad in the games to come, fan ire will rise even further.
