Financial implications of sacking Amorim now revealed, INEOS will be hoping the head coach keeps his word – report

Manchester United’s loss in the Manchester derby on Sunday meant the Red Devils plunged to 14th in the Premier League table.

Ruben Amorim’s tenure has been nothing short of disastrous, with the Portuguese having the lowest win rate among United bosses since World War II.

And given he is adamant he won’t tweak his system, that record could deteriorate in the weeks to come.

And for now, INEOS seem determined to stay the course, but recent reports have suggested that they are looking at possible alternatives.

Amorim’s uncertain future

Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be aware of the fact that dismissing the Portuguese tactician will not be cheap, with The Daily Mail claiming Amorim will be due £12 million if the 20-time English league champions sack him before November.

That will be the second-highest compensation paid to sack a manager, after Jose Mourinho. Not to mention that his coaching team will also require a significant pay-off.

“Manchester United would have to pay Ruben Amorim £12million if they sack the Portuguese coach within the first year of his contract at Old Trafford.

“The United hierarchy continue to back Amorim and are refusing to panic despite the club’s worst start to a league season in 33 years.

“It is understood that the 40-year-old would pocket £12m if he is axed before his first anniversary in the job, which is in less than seven weeks’ time. His coaching staff would also be in line for a pay-off.

Cost of sacking him

“More than £54m has already been spent in compensation to the previous five bosses and their backroom teams – David Moyes (£5.2m), Louis van Gaal (£8.4m), Jose Mourinho (£19.6m), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (£10.5m) and Erik ten Hag (£10.4m).”

Hopefully, the team can turn things around as another huge pay-off would severely dent the club’s financials given Sir Jim had already mentioned how the club would have gone bust before Christmas last year if he had not stepped in.

Interestingly, if push does come to shove, INEOS will remind Amorim of the promise he had made following the heartbreaking Europa League final defeat.

“If the board and the fans feel that I am not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation.”

That might save INEOS a lot of money. Only time will tell how all of this pans out.
