Deaf Club, the Justin Pearson (The Locust, Swing Kids, Retox)-led supergroup that also features members of ACxDC, The Manx, Squid Pisser, Run With The Hunted, Weak Flesh, and more, are releasing their sophomore full-length album We Demand a Permanent State of Happiness this Friday (9/19) via Pearson’s own Three One G label and Southern Lord. In true Deaf Club form, it’s as chaotic, discordant, and over-the-top as the many influential bands that Justin Person’s been in over the years, and the alienating musical approach is met matched by the unflinching, anti-establishment subject matter. Justin says:
Demanding a permanent state of happiness seems like a reasonable request in this world, considering the limited amount of time we have on this planet. A decent portion of the human population spends their lives hating downwards, and at this juncture, they do it well. Yes, Deaf Club is a band which makes annoying music, and we are not changing the world. But as artists, it’s our job to set things straight. Aside from my lyrics barking odd dadaist remarks, and poking fun at a huge sloth of American culture, we put those thoughts and ideas to a score of bleeps and bloops, blast beats, and grinding sounds, which really is a translation of what takes place in our brains on a daily basis. What would one expect to happen in those brains, when we are aware of this world and how mean it is? We just want to ask, why does it have to be that way? Why do billionaires actually need their excessive wealth? Why do politicians need to strip basic necessities from the general public? Why do we need to trash this planet like it’s a disposable diaper when future generations will be paying the actual price? I have similar questions for every dollar that the billionaire class has in their bank accounts.
Though the album’s not officially out for a few days, you can hear it in its entirety now. A full stream premieres right here:
