Hulk Hogan and Tony Todd missing from Emmys In Memoriam segment

Fans have been left confused and angry that wrestling legend Hulk Hogan and horror icon Tony Todd were left out of the Emmy Awards’ In Memoriam segment on Sunday (September 14).

Hogan, real name Terry Bollea, was the face of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) from the ’80s, having spearheaded the company into the mainstream with the annual Wrestlemania event. As well as appearing on TV screens for decades in the ring, he also starred in ‘90s action show Thunder In Paradise, hosted Saturday Night Live, and had his own reality show Hogan Knows Best from 2005-07.

The star passed away July 24, aged 71. His cause of death was ruled as “acute myocardial infarction”, a technical term for a heart attack.

Tony Todd died in California on November 6, 2024, at the age of 69. His cause of death was listed as stomach cancer. While primarily known for horror films such as Candyman and the Final Destination series, Todd appeared in TV shows throughout his career. As well as guest spots in The X-Files and Star Trek franchise, he was a regular on DC show The Flash as well as the seventh season of 24.

Despite their longevity, both men were left out of the In Memoriam section during the awards broadcast, which did include names such as David Lynch, Ozzy Osbourne, and Quincy Jones. Both Hogan and Todd appeared on the Emmys’ extended online tribute, but some on X (formerly Twitter) felt they deserved more.

“To the Emmys: I know who Hulk Hogan is because I watched him wrestle on television as a kid” wrote one viewer. “He should have been part of the segment tonight remembering people we lost this year.” Another replied: “WWE/F programming, cartoon, Reality show, SNL host, numerous commercials. What else did Hulk Hogan need to do to be recognized by the #Emmys?”

One fan raged: “Disgraceful. Brother was on TV for 40 years!!”, while another questioned: “If Ozzy Osbourne gets mentioned, why not Hulk Hogan?”

Fans of Todd were equally aghast. “He did a lot of great tv like Stargate SG-1 and that awesome Episode of the X-files he did called Sleepless” pointed out one post, while another added: “Now that it is very sad, Tony was an amazing actor, bringing his incredible talent to the screen. How could they snub him?”

Both men’s widows have spoken out about the snub, with Tony Todd’s wife Fatima Cortez Todd telling TMZ: “It’s just another disrespect of him. He faced a lot of disrespect in his career.”

Meanwhile, Hulk Hogan’s first wife Linda told the same outlet she believed the snub was due to his political affiliations, having supported President Donald Trump during his campaign for re-election.

This year’s ceremony took place at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, with comedian Nate Bargatze hosting. Dramas Severance, The White Lotus, and Adolescence all scored big wins, while Seth Rogen won for his comedy The Studio. Click here for a full list of winners.
