Adolescence star Owen Cooper has made history as the youngest-ever male to win an acting Emmy award.

The star took home the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie award during last night’s (September 14) ceremony for his role as Jamie Miller in the acclaimed Netflix show, which dominated the awards in general.

Accepting the award on stage, Cooper said: “Standing up here is just, wow, it’s just so surreal. Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple of years back, I didn’t expect to be even in the United States, never mind here.

“So I think tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and you step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life. I was nothing about three years ago, I’m here now.”

“So if you listen and you focus, you just step out your comfort zone a bit, who cares if you get embarrassed. Anything can be possible,” he added.

The star went on to thank his family, as well as his Adolescence co-stars and crew, concluding: “It may have my name on this award, but it really goes to the people behind the camera, and Stephen [Graham] and all the cast. I hope you all have an amazing night and goodnight.”

As well as Cooper’s historic win, Adolescence took home acting awards for Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty, while the four-part show also won Best Limited or Anthology Series, Best Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Best Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Other major winners on the night included The Pitt, which took home three major awards including Outstanding Drama Series, and The Studio, which won Outstanding Comedy Series and three others.

The latter’s total haul of 13 including its wins during last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys makes it the most-awarded comedy show for a single series in Emmys history.

Other major acting wins included Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder for Hacks, Britt Lower and Tramell Tillman for Severance, and Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa for The Pitt. Elsewhere during the ceremony, Stephen Colbert quoted Prince in a defiant Emmys speech following his late show’s cancellation.
