United will go to the market in January should Lammens not deliver with two huge names on their shortlist – report

Manchester United have announced the departure of Andre Onana, who joins Trabzonspor on a season-long loan.

Onana’s late exit leaves Ruben Amorim with Altay Bayındır, Tom Heaton and new signing Senne Lammens as his goalkeeping options.

Lammens, 23, arrives from Royal Antwerp. The Belgian is highly rated by the club’s recruitment team, but it remains to be seen if he is ready to immediately start for the Red Devils.

Bayındır has started all of United’s Premier League games this term, but the Turkey international has looked vulnerable during set-pieces. Heaton, meanwhile, has not made a competitive appearance for the side since February 2023.

New goalkeeper could be on Man United’s agenda

According to Fichajes, United are prepared to sign an experienced goalkeeper in the winter transfer window.

It is claimed United are “seriously considering” Emiliano Martínez and Mike Maignan as possible options. However, any move is likely to rely on Lammens.

If the promising shot-stopper, who moved to Old Trafford in a deal worth €25m, fails to establish himself as Amorim’s first-choice keeper before January, United will push for a new man to guard their net.

Lammens could make his United debut against Manchester City over the weekend, and his performance in the derby could go a long way in setting the tone for the direction of his stint in Manchester.

United continue to monitor Martinez

Martinez was keen to join the Mancunians, who contacted Aston Villa before deadline day to understand their demands. Ultimately, United decided to place their trust in Lammens.

The World Cup-winning star remains on United’s short list and is expected to cost around €25m.

Meanwhile, Maignan has entered the final few months of his contract at AC Milan and might be available for a cut-price fee in January.

The Frenchman is considered one of Europe’s most well-rounded goalkeepers, having impressed with his sharp reflexes and composure with the ball at his feet.
