Manchester United’s goalkeeping department now bears a different look, following the completion of two major deals.
Andre Onana’s loan move to Trabzonspor has been confirmed, while the Red Devils brought in Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day.
The club was forced to part ways with the Cameroonian, despite initially assuring him of his No. 1 spot, due to his continuous mistakes on the pitch and off-field drama.
He returned from pre-season injured, but still had the gall to ask for a brand-new contract, knowing fully well that his displays since joining the club have been well below-par.
Onana out, Lammens in
His errors did not impress his teammates as well, with quite a few calling for him to be dropped and backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton to be afforded game-time.
Interestingly, Ruben Amorim has opted to hand reserve keeper Altay Bayindir three consecutive starts in the Premier League this term, with the Turk committing mistakes in all three matches.
Lammens is said to be the new No.1, but the head coach might not throw him into the deep-end right from the off, especially with the Manchester derby up next.
Bayindir remains a shaky alternative, and now, journalist Andy Mitten has suggested on the Talk of the Devils podcast that coaches at Carrington feel Heaton is the best keeper at the club at this moment.
Heaton is United’s best keeper
“I am told by people I respect at the club that Tom Heaton is the best goalkeeper at the club. You also have some side issues. Vitek’s doing really well, but he’s on loan at Bristol City.
“So, watch him for the future. I hope we get a standout new number one for Manchester United because I’m really curious as to how the situation will develop.”
He signed a contract extension this summer, and has been made a part of the new-look leadership group within the squad, but Amorim is yet to hand him a single minute since taking over the reins.
It is pretty damning if the 39-year-old is indeed better than both Bayindir and Onana, yet Amorim never turned to him. It is also concerning if the England international is outshining the new recruit on the training pitch.
