Keanu Reeves would “love” to return for ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ sequel

Keanu Reeves has said he’d love to return as Johnny Silverhand for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.

Originally released in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 took inspiration from the Cyberpunk tabletop role-playing game. Despite issues with bugs, the game went on to sell more than 30million copies and is currently having a resurgence due to the game launching on the Nintendo Switch 2.

A sequel was announced in 2022, with development of “Project Orion” starting back in 2023. “This project is on the conceptual design level right now, and it’s going to be designed by a team of veterans who were responsible for designing Cyberpunk 2077 and (DLC) Phantom Liberty,” said studio director Adam Badowski.

Earlier this year, Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the original tabletop game, said the sequel would be set in a new city that feels like “Chicago gone wrong” alongside the original Bladerunner-inspired Orion City. A recent job listing at CD Projekt Red also spoke of the studio wanting to create “the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date.”

Now, Reeves has hinted at a possible return to the world of Cyberpunk. In the original game, he played rockstar rebel Johnny Silverhand, and despite the character’s happy ending, the door was very much left open for his return. Speaking to IGN, Reeves said he’d “absolutely love to play Johnny Silverhand again”.

Last year Idris Elba (who plays Phantom Liberty’s protagonist Solomon Reed) said he’d love to star in a movie adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 alongside Reeves.

“I think if any film could do a live-action rendition, it could be [Cyberpunk 2077], and I think his character and my character together would be, ‘Whoa.’ So, let’s speak that into existence.”

A release date for Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel has yet to be announced but CD Projekt Red are currently focusing a majority of their efforts on The Witcher 4. A launch date for The Witcher sequel hasn’t been confirmed either but bosses have promised it won’t be coming before December 31, 2026.

In other news,  the first details about the PlayStation 6 have been leaked and it’s good news for fans of physical games.
