PlayStation 6 first details have been leaked

The first details about the PlayStation 6 have been leaked, according to a new report.

Sony has yet to announce any details about the successor to the PlayStation 5, which initially launched in November 2020.

However there are plenty of rumours that the PlayStation 6 will launch in 2027 and now, according to a new report from Insider Gaming, the first details about the next-gen console have been revealed.

According to “several sources who wished to remain anonymous because they were not authorised to talk about company plans”, the PlayStation 6 will launch with a detachable disc drive. Like the PS5, players will be able to buy a digital-only console and then upgrade it to play physical discs. One source claims Sony is “firm” in its decision to release a detachable disc drive because the PS5 version “hit all the company’s internal targets”.

It’s also claimed that the PlayStation 6 will have a simpler design than current consoles to maximise efficiency and shipping costs. The report goes on to say that a “slim” PS5 could be revealed later this month and come with an 825GB hard drive instead of the standard 1TB.

NME has reached out to Sony for comment.

Last month it was reported that Sony was working on a handheld PlayStation console to rival the Nintendo Switch 2. The device can reportedly be docked like a Nintendo Switch, will be more powerful than the standard PS5 and will release in late 2027 alongside the PS6.

Rumours about a new handheld PlayStation console have been circulating since 2024, when it was reported that “Project Jupiter” was in the early stages of development.

In June, Microsoft began teasing its next generation of consoles and later this year, will launch the handheld Xbox ROG Ally.

In other news, Square Enix boss Tetsuya Nomura has given fans promising updates on Kingdom Hearts 4 and the third chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project following delay rumours.
