Rage Against The Machine‘s Tom Morello has recalled the last conversation he had with Ozzy Osbourne at his ‘Back To The Beginning‘ gig.

Heavy metal pioneer Ozzy died in July at age 76, which came only weeks after he took to the stage for his last-ever live show at Black Sabbath’s huge final concert in Villa Park, with Morello serving as “musical director” at the event.

During a recent appearance on Rocklahoma, Morello reflected on being honoured by the role, as well as reflecting on his last-ever interaction with the metal pioneer.

“This is the last time I saw Ozzy,” he said (via Loudwire). “The day is done. It’s been great, and people have been working on the show for a very long time, and we’re all hugging and crying. So we go to the afterparty and finally it’s mellow.

“I’m playing pinball with my son. And somebody taps me on the shoulder, and I’m in the middle of a multi-ball, and I’m like, ‘Get off me.’ And it’s Jack Osbourne because his dad wants to say hi.”

He said he finished his game and was told that Ozzy would like to say something. “I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh,’” he continued. “First of all, Ozzy comes to the afterparty, which is crazy right? And so, I got to one last time kiss his head, tell him I love him, thank him for a lifetime of music and his reply was, ‘Could you find Sharon? I want to get the fuck out of here.’”

Laughing about the typically Ozzy outburst, Morello joked: “That’s the perfect coda to the day.”

He went on to discuss the importance of Ozzy’s music to him personally, explaining that he named his first son Rhoads Morello in honour of Randy Rhoads, Ozzy’s beloved guitarist in his solo era, who was himself paid homage to at the ‘Back To The Beginning’ gig with a video tribute.

“So,” Morello continued, “I don’t just owe a musical and artistic debt to those guys, it’s a real personal life debt. So when Ozzy and Sharon asked me to be musical director and curate that day, I took it very, very seriously.

“The idea was to make it the greatest day in the history of heavy metal and I think we did pretty well.”

Yungblud‘s recent tribute to the late metal singer did not go down well with The Darkness‘ Dan Hawkins, who has hit out at he and Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt.

Together, the musicians covered his solo classics ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home’, as well as Black Sabbath‘s ‘Changes’, prompting Hawkins to call them a “bunch of bellends”.

There was an outpouring of affection upon Ozzy’s death, particularly in his hometown of Birmingham where thousands of people lined the streets to pay tribute to his funeral procession. Jack later said the public condolences meant a lot to the family. “We read all the letters. It didn’t go unnoticed” he said in a recent YouTube video.
