Russian deputies back fines for clicking on ‘extremist’ content

Russian lawmakers advanced a bill on July 17 — backed by 283 votes to 22 in its second reading — that would criminalise online searches for content deemed “extremist” by authorities, including songs glorifying Ukraine and material by feminist rock bands. The bill also seeks to ban VPN advertising targeting Russian users and the transfer of SIM cards — tools often used for private browsing. But the draft law has drawn criticism across the political spectrum, with opponents warning it could severely restrict internet freedom.
