Assassin’s Creed fans are already worried about the planned live-action adaptation at Netflix.

Netflix first spoke about a live-action adaptation of hit video game series Assassin’s Creed back in 2020 and yesterday (July 17) they confirmed the project had finally been greenlit.

“Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will,” reads the official description from Netflix. “The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

The Assassin’s Creed adaptation will be created by Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener, who was behind the second season of the disastrous Paramount + Halo adaptation.

Despite positive reviews, many Halo fans took issue with the show because it strayed so far away from the source material. It didn’t help that season one showrunner admitted the team “didn’t look at the game [or] talk about the game”, instead focusing on the characters and the wider world of Halo for their adaptation. It was eventually cancelled after just two seasons. 

Now Assassin’s Creed fans are worried the Netflix adaptation will suffer a similar fate.

“This is gonna get cancelled with no closure after two seasons. Netflix is the worst,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “There goes any hype I may have had. They didn’t respect Halo, I can’t expect them to respect Assassin’s Creed,” said another. 

“It’s so hard to understand this business. Why would anyone hire someone to adapt a video game who failed miserably at adapting an even more popular video game? The fans didn’t like it. General audiences didn’t like it. It was very expensive and got cancelled. Like…how does that result in more work? Wish I could fail up the way people seem to in Hollywood,” wrote a third.

Assassin’s Creed developers Ubisoft have said they’re going to be involved in the adaptation to “deliver an experience that speaks to the heart of what fans love about Assassin’s Creed, while introducing its unforgettable worlds and timeless themes to new audiences worldwide.” Release date, cast and plot details have yet to be confirmed.
