Netflix is officially working on a live-action ‘Assassin’s Creed’ series

Netflix has officially green-lit a live-action Assassin’s Creed series.

Yesterday, Netflix announced that it has finally picked up the long-gestating adaptation. It’s been in the works for five years, and is now officially moving forward at the streaming giant.

Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo, The Killing) will serve as the adaptation’s creators, showrunners and executive producers. A release date, nor the show’s cast, have been announced.

Netflix’s official logline for the series reads: “Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

Several members of the Ubisoft team will also be involved in the series, with Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill coming onboard as executive producers for Ubisoft Film & Television.

We look forward to delivering an experience that speaks to the heart of what fans love about Assassin’s Creed, while introducing its unforgettable worlds and timeless themes to new audiences worldwide.”

This isn’t the first time Assassin’s Creed has been adapted for a different medium. Back in 2016, 20th Century Fox released an Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson. The film wasn’t well received, but performed decently at the box office.

Other gaming-related adaptations at Netflix include the acclaimed Arcane: League Of Legends series, Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

The latest Assassin’s Creed game, Shadows, scored a glowing five-star review from NME, with Echo Apsey writing: “Delays have plagued Shadows’ development with its release date pushed back repeatedly – but it’s worth the wait. An incredibly well-put-together and expertly designed experience, this is one of the greatest Assassin’s Creed games yet.”
