‘Solo Levelling: ReAwakening’ still

A live action remake of Solo Leveling has been ordered by Netflix, with Byeon Woo-seok set to star.

Based on the Korean web novel by Chugong, the series places in a realm of gifted hunters who battle deadly monsters to protect mankind. Sung Jin-woo, a notoriously weak hunter, is given extraordinary strength through a mysterious program, which kickstarts a journey across various dungeons to discover the true source of his power.

One of South Korea’s most popular crossover franchises, the web novel was first published in 2016, followed by a webtoon in 2018. The immensely popular anime adaptation premiered on January 7, 2024, with Season 2 two coming in January 2025. Now, it appears a live action version is on the horizon.

An article by The Hollywood Reporter states the series will be co-directed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, directors of 2019 blockbuster Ashfall, and star Byeon Woo-seok in the lead role of Sung Jin-woo. The outlet claims the actor has been a fan favourite to play the part, having impressed in the TV series Lovely Runner and 2022 hit movie 20th Century Girl.

No further details have been unveiled for the project, although a Netflix press release stated: “The upcoming live-action series adaptation promises to feature vivid characters, dynamic action sequences, and exhilarating quests, brought to life by a world-class global VFX team,” before concluding: “With an expanded universe and Byeon Woo-seok in the lead, Solo Leveling is shaping up to be a highly anticipated release”.

In March, the Solo Leveling anime broke a prestigious streaming record on streaming service Crunchyroll, beating the popular One Piece despite only having 23 episodes released at that point. Following the conclusion of season two, NME looked into the future for the anime, including the possibility of a third season and a feature-length adventure.
