The Paper, a new TV spin-off to the US version of The Office, has confirmed a September 5 debut on streaming service Peacock in the US.

The show is set in a dying Midwestern US newspaper, and stars Domhnall Gleeson as the idealistic new employee looking to revive the title. Sabrina Impacciatore plays the paper’s managing editor. The supporting cast includes Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and British comedian Tim Key.

Variety has reported that the show will premiere its first four episodes on September 5, followed by two new episodes every Thursday until September 25. Sky has the exclusive rights to the show in the UK and will broadcast at the same time.

The official synopsis reads: “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it”.

In February, it was confirmed The Office US actor Oscar Nuñez will return as his character Oscar Martinez in Peacock’s spin-off series. No other cast members from that show have been announced as returning.

The Office’s star, Steve Carell, said last year that he definitely won’t be coming back. The actor told The Hollywood Reporter: “I will be watching but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that”.

However, he was quick to praise the idea of the show, as well as its cast. “I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company, and I worked with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the leads; I did (2022 series) The Patient with him and he’s an excellent actor and a super nice guy so I think it’ll be great”.

Elsewhere, in May The Office favourite Jenna Fischer denied that the show went downhill after Steve Carell departed, arguing: “Some of my favourite episodes were in seasons eight and nine after Steve had left”.
