Lionel Messi could add an Argentina teammate and World Cup champion to Inter Miami

De Paul, under contract with Atlético until June 2026, is eager to make the move sooner rather than later, though a post-World Cup 2026 transfer remains on the table.

The summer transfer window is slowly heating up, and one of the most intriguing potential moves involves Rodrigo De Paul, who is now strongly linked with a transfer to Inter Miami, where he could reunite with Lionel Messi.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the MLS side has already made its move:

Understand Inter Miami have now started talks with Atlético Madrid for Rodrigo De Paul deal! Inter Miami want to keep its ambitions high after the Club World Cup with WC champion De Paul as main target. Told Rodrigo’s open to the move to Inter Miami with talks underway.”

De Paul’s desire is clear

The Atlético Madrid midfielder, who remains under contract with the Spanish club until June 2026, is reportedly eager to join MLS sooner rather than later. While a transfer during this window is possible, sources close to the player haven’t ruled out a move after the 2026 World Cup, depending on how talks progress.

De Paul, 31, is a key player for Argentina’s national team under Lionel Scaloni and is also considered one of Messi’s closest friends off the field. That connection is crucial—especially at a time when Luis Suárez’s future at Inter Miami remains uncertain. The Uruguayan striker’s contract expires in December 2025, and it’s unclear whether he will continue with the club beyond that.

A key move for Messi’s happiness

Beyond the tactical benefits, signing De Paul would be a powerful move to maintain Messi’s happiness and comfort in Miami. While he also shares strong bonds with Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Óscar Ustari, Messi’s relationships with Suárez and De Paul run deeper and have been pivotal throughout his recent career.

Inter Miami is fully aware of the emotional and sporting value De Paul brings. As the club works to extend Messi’s contract through 2026—the year the new Miami Freedom Park stadium is set to open—they’re already laying the foundation for a more competitive roster.
