Insiders claim United have “reached out” to lethal free agent with 71 PL goals in shock twist to striker hunt – report

Manchester United have made a shock move for former Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Red Devils are keen to add more firepower to their ranks after a poor showing in front of goal last season.

United have looked in various directions such as Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen and Ollie Watkins but have so far made no concrete move for a number nine.

In the spring, it was reported that United may look to sign upcoming free agent Calvert-Lewin and he confirmed his exit from Everton last month.

Nonetheless, there were reports that the striker’s wage demands would make a move to Old Trafford unlikely but The Sun challenges this notion.

The English newspaper reported late last night that “Manchester United are making a shock move to sign free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin.”

It is stated that Amorim is interested in signing him and “insiders have revealed the club reached out to the ex-Toffees frontman about the possibility of a surprise move from Merseyside to Manchester.”

If United are able to make financial space, there could be room to bring in a back-up striker and the outlet suggests that Calvert-Lewin fits the bill.

The Sun reports that “United believe Calvert-Lewin has qualities they lack and the demands of being third or fourth choice may suit him.”

What’s more, United could offer a “lucrative contract, including bonuses for appearances” which could suit both the club and the player.

Many Red Devils’ fans may not be too enthused about the idea of signing Calvert-Lewin, who has suffered numerous injuries and seen his goalscoring numbers tumble in recent years.

Nonetheless, The Peoples Person has recently argued that the striker could be the perfect back-up option.

Were United to sign a Gyokeres, Osimhen or Watkins and replace Rasmus Hojlund with Calvert-Lewin, it might make a potential transfer more palatable for fans of the club.

The England international has played nine seasons in the Premier League and scored 71 goals for Everton during this time.
